We have decided to switch blogs at this point to something more different and hopefully more professional as well. You will still be able to follow us just the same on the new blog. The link to the new blog is http://etsybeadembroideryguild.wordpress.com

We hope to see you over there to enjoy the new format, new blog posts and of course, the challenges! An Artisan Interview with Sharon Edelman begins the proceedings and I believe next week we will have the Challenge up! 2011. I saw a bead embroidered collar in an issue of Bead and Button magazine
and wanted to make one. But I couldn’t work out how to do it (I had ideas about
large peyote stitched components, or netting, I never guessed fabric would be
involved!). A friend put me onto Etsy, and I searched around for items like the
one I’d seen. And found Kinga Nichols’ shop! I asked her about one of her
collars and she put me onto a book called “The Art of Bead Embroidery” by
Sherri Serafini and Heidi Kummli (so that’s what it’s called… Nothing to do
with peyote stitch at all :P) I ordered it from Amazon, read it, and that was
it! I was hooked. My first ever bead embroidered project was “Colours of
Autumn,” part of my Season’s Collection.

I have been beading since 2005. I actually used to play with beads when I was young with the cheap loom you can buy for a few dollars. I grew up in a VERY small town on the Canadian Border and was always influenced by the bead work at the local 'Indian Store' (that was the name of it, I am sure it has changed since in lieu of political correctness).

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">
When did you first try bead embroidery as a technique? I was bead embroidering 6 months into teaching myself how to bead. This magazine cover was my inspiration and how I learned: http://www.beaduniquemag.com/issues/issue8.shtml and my piece named Royalty was the result of that.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">
Why do you like bead embroidery? I love bead embroidery because there really are no rules. All you need is knowledge of a basic stitch and the rest is all you. It is virtually impossible to duplicate and I think that it gives more opportunity to a bead artist to 'think outside the box' and allows more creative freedoms that a patterned weave.

When I started beading, I was totally enthralled with the European and Russian bead artists and I still am. They all were very influential in my work. I am inspired by way too many people/place/things to list and don't seem to lack in that department, it actually drives me crazy sometimes.

Well it is that time again when we put on our thinking hats and worked up a new theme for our next Bead Fest. This time it is Chocolate Cherry, what can we say our two most important and basic food groups. So this next bead fest will be a tribute to these wonderful colors. All designed pieces will incorporate the colors of chocolate and cherry. The collage not only include those delectable, decadent, deserts, but also items designed with those colors. Make sure you do not drool to much on your keyboard with this next theme. We look forward to what these amazing artists come up with.Etsy Bead Embroidery Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16172082139016215864noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7755336872059340340.post-3274328092251470682012-07-21T10:14:00.003-06:002012-07-21T13:31:07.359-06:00

We are really excited to announce that eight of our members are in the Battle of the Beadsmith competition, five in the actual competition and three as alternates. There were only 3 alternates chosen and all come from this guild. This is the first year this competition has been offered and all our members are really excited about the competition. Five of the members who are in the competition include Sharayah Sheldon, Joanne Browne, Christina Neit, Jacquie Champion, and Christian Rodriquez. The three alternates include Connie Prinsloo, Veronica Jonsson and Mickey Parker. All pieces for the competition will be turned in no later than July 10, 2012 if you want to follow the competition you can on Facebook at Battle of the Beadsmith.

We also have our beadfest coming up in the month of July, everyone has been working away on their projects with the topic being Fantasy/Fairytales. We decided to extend out the due date to July 10, 2012. So you will have to wait a few extra days before we post the pictures of the completed projects. Normally we would have had them turned in on June 30, but this month has been an extremely busy time for the guild and a extension was needed. We added a few new people so we are excited to see the new work from them as this is their first beadfest.

Thanks for all your continued support as we work to make this guild something really special.Etsy Bead Embroidery Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16172082139016215864noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7755336872059340340.post-49929742319690773532012-05-21T21:01:00.003-06:002012-05-21T21:04:11.620-06:00As the month of May winds down I thought this would be a good time to introduce another of the Etsy Bead Embroidery Guild's artists. This month we interviewed Bev Haring of EsmerldasStudio.
Name: Bev Haring

Shop: Esmerldas Studio

Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Please introduce yourself to the readers: Born and raised in the Denver area, I lived in Northern California for 30 years before returning to Colorado when my husband and I retired from the corporate jobs in 2001.

How long have you been beading? I made beaded headbands for my dolls when I was a child, and in high school I won a prize for a bead embroidered vest. Then life happened and I didn’t really bead again until I retired and started playing with creating jewelry again.

Eye of Horus

When did you first try bead embroidery as a technique? Bead embroidery sort of evolved out of my interest in fiber arts in general, about 8 years ago I did a piece that was a combination of quilting and bead embroidery (titled “The Road to Oz”), and shortly after that I saw copies of Bead and Button magazine that made me realize there was a much bigger potential in this art form.

Why do you like bead embroidery? I always thought there was nothing better than a really big box of crayons – color is a good thing! I have never mastered drawing to my satisfaction, but creating patterns and “pictures” with beads is the next best thing. In addition, it is a good complementary art form to my art quilts, allowing me to work in both small and large formats

What are your inspirations and influences? The work of Sherri Serafini, Heidi Kummli and Margie Deeb inspired my “think outside the box” approach. I find that the natural world is a continual source of ideas for pieces, and the colors of natural stones often dictate the flow and design of a piece.
Folk tales and fairytales have been in existence since the

Our next featured artist from our filigree bead fest is Amy of ovenfriedbeads she made this piece which was inspired by the sea and the life that lives in it. Its main focal piece is a sea urchin button.

She says that " "The centerpiece is a sea urchin button with a filigree base. Beads that I used to surround it are Czech and Japanese glass seed beads, abalone, and Czech faceted beads. The disks are backed with a complementary brown spotted fabric. Our next featured artist is Karen from TropicalKaren she made her own filigree pattern on her entry. This bead embroidered hamsa measures 2 1/2" high and 2" wide. It is done with 11/0 black and shades of aqua seed beads and is backed with dove grey Ultrasuede.

Hamsa, also romanized khamsa, is an Arabic word that literally means "five", but also "the five fingers of the hand“.
Its exact origins are unknown but it is an almost universal sign of protection which was used to ward off the evil eye.

With the advent of Islam, the khamsa came to be known as the hand of Fatima to commemorate Fatima Zharsa, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.

The hamsa's path into Jewish culture, and its popularity particularly in Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish communities, can be traced through its use in Islam. This "favorite Muslim talisman" became a part of Jewish tradition in North African and Middle Eastern Jewish communities.

The khamsa holds recognition as a bearer of good fortune among Christians in the region as well. Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary.

Used to protect against evil eye, a malicious stare believed to be able to cause illness, death, or just general unluckiness, hamsas often contain an eye symbol.
This "Statement" collar surprisingly contains 8 different filigree pieces artistically hidden throughout. Sharayah of 4UIDZNE, was inspired by the English Rose Gardens.

Using those images, she mapped out the placement of 7 small filigree curves , 1 square filigree and the 5 rivolis so that a free-flowing path existed throughout the piece. Small freshwater pearls were the "stepping stones: taking us to another rose, flower or hedge.
As we continue to feature our artists who participated in the BEAD FEST, Heather of heathershaven created an artistically designed necklace. It features and Ivory cameo surround by pearls of various shapes, colors, and make. including freshwater, glass and acrylic. Teardrop pearls hugged by brass filigree bead cones are suspended in the three cutouts.
On either side is an antique brass medallion with pearl teardrops hanging. The necklace is finished with an antique brass chain and S hook clasp. Bead work is back with a romantic dusty rose Ultrasuede.
It measures about 17 inches total.
to create masterpieces inspired by a commonly chosen Theme. We organize Bead
Fests in every season - which enables our Members to work on their piece nearly
3 months. This is a non-challenge event, when everyone can challenge themselves
to create more professional bead work. There is no prize, no title, no
competition - only the fun and inspirational beading. Participating on Bead
Fests for our members are optional. This provides full attention and perfection
of the entries.

All entries are posted in EBEG Treasuries at ETSY, Our FB Fan Page and here on
the Blog.
~~~The Theme~~~
Romantic, ancient and sometimes steam punkish, filigree has adorned women and
men both throughout the ages. A costume or hairstyle that needed a bit of added
beauty would be complimented with a swirl of metal, gemstone, wood or beaded
glory in the form of filigree adornment. Pendants, brooches, necklaces, hair
combs, barrettes, even swords and shields have sported filigree. I thought that
this component would be a wonderful theme for bead embroidery. No matter what
the filigree is made of, it can be surrounded by beads in any way the artist
sees fit, or even made up of beads itself. There are glorious works out there
that have beaded 'filigree' used as the focal for a necklace or bracelet that
have inspired me. So, anything goes, bead your own filigree, or use a metal or
wooden component - or a pierced piece of faux ivory or gemstone - just include
filigree as your main focal element for your piece and have FUN!!! (The main
focal would also be considered to be multiples, as in a bracelet made of many
small components which each included filigree.)
participated in the bead fest, so you know who did each work. This is
such an amazing group with a lot of talent. It is a pleasure to be part
While in college, Catherine
Taylor majored in Interior Design and for many years worked in furniture
stores, as a wholesale furniture manufacturer's sales representative, and
freelance interior designer. She then became a licensed life & health
insurance agent and worked for major insurance companies in group employee
benefits sales.
Her bead work journey started out due to a family tragedy. In 2005, her
husband John Taylor had a misdiagnosed blood clot. This subsequently resulted
in amputation which led to many other complications. His recovery was extremely
long, and they were fortunate that she was able to care for him 24/7. That same
year, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disease,
and Reynaud’s disease. Her world as she knew it was shattered; all she had
known up to that point was a corporate world. She recalls how your world can
change overnight.
Several months after her husband's amputation, she started to teach herself
to bead. She started with simple stringing which eventually grew as she
gained new skills and new desires to expand her creativity. This led her
to eventually to try bead embroidery and bead weaving. She could find solace in
her beading, it became her new hobby. Through the learning process with
bead weaving and bead embroidery, she found herself on a new journey.
Many of her inspirations come from the ocean since they live on the sea for
six months out of the year on their own yacht they named the "Chips
Ahoy." Many times her designs include dolphins, mermaids, sea
shells, starfish and many other themes from the sea. Other inspirations
come from her large library of bead magazines and books from other bead
artists.
She does not have one particular style but wants her pieces to enhance
and make the wearer feel beautiful. Her styles tend to lean towards the
romantic or Victorian preferring a more elegant theme in her work. Some
designs are thought out before hand but she says most just evolve
spontaneously. Since joining the Etsy Bead Embroidery Guild they have
stretched her creativity with their first challenge in ways she herself would
not have and that they have had a positive effect on her bead work vision and
journey.
Her pieces usually start with a focal piece that sets the stage for her design;
she says she tries to portray a story in each piece. She loves to work
with unusual beads, crystals or pearls and likes to use Miyuki and Toho seed
beads.
Her bead work has been a process about growing and learning that is always
continuous and she wouldn't have it any other way. She has taught bead
embroidery (and crochet) and hopes to be influential for others to expand their
artistic talents in the bead world. She feels if just one person can feel
the way she does about bead work then it has all been worthwhile for her. Her
future plans are to keep exploring new techniques and markets and to constantly
expand what she has learned.
She is married to John
Taylor, and they have 6 beautiful granddaughters whom she adores. They have
also become new parents to a Bernese mountain dog named Lulu. She resides in
Overland Park, KS for half the year and the other half is sailing to the Pacific
Northwest islands during the summer months. This summer (2012), they plan to
cruise to Alaska which will be 3-4 months of exploration. It will be
interesting to see what new designs she comes up with from this experience and
what new themes may develop.
Etsy Bead Embroidery Guildhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16172082139016215864noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7755336872059340340.post-60305804368451433892012-03-07T12:45:00.000-07:002012-03-07T12:45:53.911-07:00Well March is here and the weather (hopefully) is making a change for the better as we head into spring. With March already here our Bead Fest Challenge for spring is just about over, many of the artists have been working hard on their spring projects. It is really amazing at the diversity and the quality of the beading in this guild. The work and time put into these projects would boggle the mind. On April 5 a showcase of the hard work will be posted here at the blog, the theme was to present work that had filigrees in them.
The guild has gone through many changes in February, old leaders stepping down and new leaders stepping up. We have a new blog which I hope everyone will enjoy reading which will feature many accomplishments and frustrations in this wonderful art medium from the beginning process to the end. Also, being able to learn more about the members of the guild through our member spotlights and spotlights of some of the work that goes into making these lovely pieces.
Along with our many changes we also had 19 new members join us this past month which is really exciting, all very talented Etsy bead embroidery artists. Our group grew from 18 to a whopping 37! WOW! So welcome all the new members we look forward to hearing from you.
So welcome and enjoy everything that we have to offer and if you have any problems with the blog or questions please let me know either by dropping an email at ebeguild@yahoo.com or MPDesigns@MPBeadworks.com. Thank you to all the support and positive words we have received from our many readers already. Sharayah has always been involved in some form of art, that path that has led to her present passion but it followed many twists and turns. Originally she was involved with performance art and received a music scholarship to college. She however changed her focus and received a bachelor's degree in special education where she taught special needs children for 12 years after which she went on to get a master's degree in educational psychology and a doctorate in philosophy where she was later hired at the Milwaukee Public Schools and served as a counselor for 18 years. She thought this was going to be job for life.
Originally Sharayah had done floral designs and had exhibited them in juried show but when she was recovering from a bone graft surgery in
2000 she discovered bead embroidery and made the transition from floral design to beading. Primarily self taught she did manage to study with several renown bead embroidery artists, Sherry Serafini, Marcia DeCoster, and Carol Cypher. She has also managed to take other classes that have helped develop her skills even further.
In 2005, a twist of fate changed her entire direction in life. She says, "The last thing I remember was seeing the car coming at me" which resulted in a moped accident that left her with a severe neurological injury that eventually forced her to resign from what she thought was going to be her job for life . It was an adjustment and was something she didn't want to do, but it found it was a necessity. She says that "every time there was an injury/medical condition, it was time to expand my skills (in beading) and turn adversity into productivity."
Sharayah draws her inspiration from nature, a life event or from simply holding a bead in her hand and visualizing what it could become. She creates one-of-a-kind wearable art/ body adornments. Using turquoise, copper, crystal, pearl and other eclectic findings, in which each beaded necklace, bracelet, barrette and purse begins with a single object as the focal and then she builds her design around it. She says "I visualize the beading space as my canvas, my needle as the paint brush and the beads as my palette." Drawing inspiration from her own life she looks at her life as a tapestry and that "you need the dark colors to bring out the bright. Not only is each piece unique with its own story to tell, but it is also multicolored and faceted" just like our own lives. Each experience brings out a new and interesting facet in our lives each bead brings out a new and interesting feature to the jewelry that she creates.
